Looking down the Swampy Plains River from the Spillway

The picturesque lakeside village of Khancoban is nestled in a lush valley amongst the foot hills of the magnificent Snowy Mountains, right on the edge of the Kosciuszko National Park. Containing Australia's highest mountain, Mount Kosciuszko (2,228 metres) and all of New South Wales' ski fields, the park is home to many rare plants and animals. There are almost unlimited opportunities for recreation all year round and Khancoban provides an excellent base for exploring the park and the Snowy Mountains Scheme.

Graziers impressed by an abundance of fodder and water settled Khancoban in the 1840's. It continued as a sleepy hamlet until construction of The Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme began in 1949. Khancoban is now the headquarters of the Murray region of the scheme, Murray 1 and Murray 2 power stations are nearby.

Engineers employed by the Snowy Mountains Scheme, created the Alpine Way linking Khancoban and northern Victoria with New South Wales via Thredbo and Jindabyne. This opened up the western escarpment to tourism and provided incredibly beautiful views of the snow-capped peaks of the Great Dividing Range. Scammels Lookout, Geehi and other sights along this road are truly a must see for all visitors to the area.

Over the past ten years the Alpine Way has been virtually rebuilt and is now fully sealed creating an all weather route for visitors. The road is open all year, all vehicles are advised and two wheel drive vehicles are required to carry snow chains from June to October (one way rental available). Access to Khancoban is also provided by Summit Coaches and a small but well tended airstrip - an absolute gem for aircraft enthusiasts.

Visitors now travel long distances to enjoy the thrill of Khancoban's adventure activities. Thunder down the Upper Murray in a whitewater raft. Pack up the family and a picnic, for a leisurely canoe trip down the Swampy Plains River. If your idea of fun is to scale the dizzy heights, Khancoban offers some of the best rock climbing, abseiling and hang-gliding sites in Australia. Khancoban is also noted for fantastic trout fishing and boating. Imagine yourself wrestling a five-kilogram monster from the depths of the pondage, or take a float trip along the pristine waters of the Lower Swampy to find the perfect spot from which to entice the big one with a fly.

The area is also abundant in native flora & fauna, with plenty of kangaroos, emus, wombats and platypus. The area is also home to an incredible array of native bird-life, from the magnificent wedge-tailed eagle, kookaburra, cockatoo, pelican and duck on the lake to the colourful parrots and majestic black swans. The elusive lyrebird and bower bird are often seen.

A scenic drive along the Alpine Way toward Thredbo will take you to Tom Groggin Station, home to Jack Riley. Jack's life was the basis for Banjo Paterson's epic poem The Man from Snow River.

In Winter, Khancoban offers easy access to Thredbo and other the New South Wales Ski resorts, including Mount Selwyn. Cross country skiers and tourers have access to the main range from the Cabramurra road. Year round bush walkers and mountain bikers, exploring the many tracks and trails, will delight in the huge variety of wildlife and plant species native to the area.

This is truly a natural wonderland!!!
